Alita: Battle Angel is an upcoming American cyberpunk action movie based on the manga Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro, also known as Battle Angel Alita. Produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, the film is directed by Robert Rodriguez from a screenplay by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. The film stars Rosa Salazar in the title role, with supporting roles played by Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.
First officially announced in 2003, the production and release of the film were repeatedly delayed due to Cameron’s work on Avatar and its aftermath. After years of languishing in the hell of development, Rodriguez was announced as director of the film in April 2016, and Salazar will be elected the following month. Principal photography began in Austin, Texas, in October 2016 and lasted until February 2017.
Alita: Battle Angel is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 14, 2019
It’s a bummer that Alita: Battle Angel was delayed from its planned holiday season launch, but there’s good news for fans eager to see more of the film: a new trailer has arrived. Unlike the preview that dropped in July which focused more on Alita finding herself, this one shows a lot more action and sword-swinging. We see Alita fight in a more advanced body, sliding around on a concrete luge track and slicing up bad guys.
Alita: Battle Angel is a live-action adaptation of the manga and anime Battle Angel Alita. It’s the brainchild of James Cameron, and is being directed by Robert Rodriguez. Cameron had been talking about the film adaptation of Alita for almost a decade at this point, but handed over the reigns to Rodriguez so he could make four new Avatar sequels. Meanwhile, cyberpunk author Pat Cadigan is handling the novelization of the film, as well as a prequel book called Alita: Battle Angel – Iron City.
The movie stars Rosa Salazar as Alita, a junked cyborg who is found by Doctor Ido, played by Christoph Waltz. Like many Japanese storylines, Alita is suffering from Amnesia, and is on a journey to try and remember her past.
