The Prodigy

The Prodigy is an upcoming American horror thriller directed by Nicholas McCarthy and starring actress Taylor Schilling. [1] The plot centers around a child, whose disruptive behavior indicates that an evil, possibly supernatural force possessed him, forcing his parents to investigate if there are sinister forces involved. [2] Jackson Robert Scott, who was one of the stars of the adaptation of Stephen King 2017 It, plays the son of Schilling

Orange is Taylor Schilling of New Black, who plays a mother whose son may be possessed by an evil entity in the trailer and poster of The Prodigy. Originally titled Descendant, The Prodigy hails from several creators with experience in the horror genre, including producers Tara Farney (The Rite) and Tripp Vinson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose), as well as director Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact) and the writer Jeff Buhler (The midnight meat train). The latter has been especially busy lately and wrote the reboots of Pet Sematary and The Grudge next year, in addition to this film.

Schilling stars in The Prodigy as Sarah, a single mom who notices some disturbing changes in her young son’s behavior and finally begins to suspect that something supernatural is up and running. Jackson Robert Scott plays Miles, Sarah’s son, and previously played (unfortunate) Georgie Denborough in the IT film adaptation of last year. Other key members of the cast include Colm Feore (House of Cards) as Arthur Jacobson, a companion Sarah approaches, in an effort to fight against the (potentially literal) demons of his son.

The Prodigy teaser consists mainly of images of two key scenes from the film; the first about Jacobson’s attempt to hypnotize Miles and determine if he really is possessed, and the second involves a nighttime encounter between Sarah and Miles that culminates with (what else?) a jump scare. McCarthy’s horror film has already been compared to the classics of the genre such as The Omen, based on his premise, and the teaser’s advancement also brings to mind James Wan’s first insidious film (as well as the conjunction of Annabelle with her great final scare). Still, however derivative it may be, The Prodigy otherwise seems acceptably creepy until now.
